President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Special Anti Corruption Unit (SACU) this morning arrested former cabinet minister Dr Ignatius Chombo.
In an article Published by online newspaper Zimmorningpost, Chombo was arrested on criminal abuse of office charges stemming from the Uchena Land Commision. The charges are one count of fraud and 5 counts of abuse of duty as a public officer.
This comes just a few weeks after Prosecutor-General Kumbirai Hodzi said that the cases against Chombo and Prisca Mupfumira would soon be concluded.
Chombo is a former long serving minister in the previous Governments of the late former President Robert Mugabe. He served for many years as Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister. He also served as Home Affairs minister before being assigned to the Finance & Economic Development Minister, the position he held before the November 17 Coup that toppled Mugabe.
The former minister is reportedly a very wealthy man who owns a mouth watering property portfolio among other riches.
At the time of the coup he was reported to belong to the G40 faction of Zanu Pf, which was locked in internecine warfare with army backed Lacoste faction which eventually won catapulling current President Emmerson Mnangagwa into power.
