Teachers Condemn Zimsec’s Incompetence

Teachers who were involved in the marking of the 2020 Zimsec ‘O’ and ‘A’ level examinations have accused the examination board of incompetence after logistical challenges disrupted the marking process.

In an interview with 263times last week, some teachers based in Harare and Masvingo said they felt neglected by Zimsec which has totally failed to meet its contractual obligations and is not doing enough to make sure the marking process is done smoothly.

‘’We have no accomodation and we cannot afford transport fares .’’ Said a teacher who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“Basically the whole process has failed to take note of the WHO and government recommendations with regards to the prevention of the spread of covid -19.

‘’The Zimsec management has proved to be incompetent and negligent I the way it is running examinations, because it is worrying that Zimsec is failing to provide basic things and organise marking halls where teachers can observe proper social distancing.’’ Said the teacher.

Meanwhile, teachers unions have accused Zimsec for the disorderly scenes that have marred the marking sessions at centres across the country.

Progressive Teachers Union Of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) secretary general Raymond Majongwe told the Daily News that as of Friday some teachers were still to get their scripts with indications that logistical challenges had delayed the delivery of scripts from provinces like Midlands, Masvingo and Manicaland.

‘’Six days on, most markers have not started marking because the government is not paying for accommodation and dinner which is disrupting the whole process of marking.’’ Mr Majongwe said.

Mr Majongwe added that, the quality of evaluation of the public examinations is rooted in the morale of the examiners.

‘’The quality of evaluation of public examinations is rooted in the morale of examiners and it frustrates the quality of evaluation.’’ He said.

Meanwhile, 263times is yet to speak to the ZIMSEC spokesperson Nicola Dhlamini.
