Zimbabwe’s tobacco selling season has started and the auction floors were opened this morning with the first bale fetching 4.30USD per kilogramme.
According to estimates, in excess of 200 million kilogrammes of the gold leaf will be sold this season as compared to 180 million kilogrammes last year.
Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Resettlement Minister Dr Anxious Masuka officially opened the season.
He said he expects prices to firm as the season progressed.
Tobacco is a key contributor to the country’s foreign currency earnings and the opening of the marketing season is a major boost towards the country’s economic stability consolidation efforts.
