We Are Ready For Elections -Mwonzora

MDT T President, Senator Douglas Mwonzora says his party is not afraid of elections as they are sure to win in the 2023 harmonised elections.

In an interview with 263times in Harare yesterday, the MDC T leader said he will surprise all and sundry during the 2023 elections even though he is the most underestimated politician at the moment.

“We are ready for elections. I am one of the most underestimated politician on the land right now despite my successes against my opponents.  First in internal elections I’ve beaten them, second in political strategy we have won. However we are ready for the elections, we have been restructuring meetings and if you look at the attendances, you will find out that we are attracting more people than other political parties.” He said.

Mwonzora claimed that Afrobarometer accidentally pointed to him winning even though they mentioned President Mnangagwa and Nelson Chamisa as the front runners. He said they indicated this by publishing that 73% of Zimbabweans prefer dialogue as the way to solve the country’s political question, adding that his party was the only one that was pushing for dialogue.

“Now if you go to the Afrobarometer, you will see that the report does not mention us. It mentions Mr Mnangagwa, it mentions Mr Chamisa and so on but the people who wrote that report sort of inadvertently point to me winning,” he said.

Douglas Mwonzora is reported to have handed President Mnangagwa a four-page document on June 11 seeking the suspension of by-elections which would give him an edge over Nelson Chamisa’s MDC Alliance in the fight for recognition as the main opposition party in Zimbabwe.

Furthermore, the former MDC Secretary General however pointed out that his MDC T party is likely to win the elections as it is the only party that offer grounds for dialogue.

“The 73% of Zimbabweans want dialogue, we are the only party calling for dialogue. It is possible to win electoral reforms using dialogue because when you are on the dialogue table, there is equality there. That is why you have seen us going to the President with proposals for dialogue and he has said he is going to respond.” Mwonzora said.

Meanwhile, Senator Mwonzora castigated his rival, MDC Alliance leader, Nelson Chamisa’s demonstration methods, labeling them as ‘irresponsible’

“Mr Chamisa’s methods don’t work, he has been trying to call for demonstrations, they have been poorly attended. Also you can not call for demonstrations under these conditions (Covid-19 pandemic) without looking irresponsible. The only viable solution is to use dialogue.” Added Mwonzora

Douglas Mwonzora Was the MDC Alliance Secretary General, a position he contested for and lost to Charlton Hwende at the MDC Alliance congress in Gweru. The Supreme Court however ruled that the congress was illegal and thus restored Mwonzora to the position under the 2014 MDC T structures, pending a new MDC T congress. He later contested for the presidency of the MDC T and won against Thokozani khupe, Elias Mudzuri and Morgan komichi with an overwhelming majority.
