Government Extends Lockdown By Another Two Weeks

Government has announced an extension of its Level 4 national lockdown by two weeks saying although there has been a notable decrease in the number of coronavirus infections and deaths, more efforts are required to contain the third wave of the pandemic.

Zimbabwe recorded 319 new cases and 27 deaths yesterday but 901 people recovered leaving the number of active cases at 10 430.

Up to now, midlands still has the highest number of active cases at 1 711 followed by Mashonaland West with 1 548 but Harare is down to 945 and Bulawayo to 235.

More than 60 000 people were vaccinated yesterday with 37 016 getting the first jab and 23 397 the second however more than 1.5 million people have now been fully vaccinated.

Meanwhile the recovery rate is now at 88% from 69% at the beginning of the month.

In a statement last night, the Minister of Information Publicity and Broadcasting Services Monica Mutsvangwa said people must continue observing Covid-19 protocols.

“Government wishes to inform that the Level 4 Lockdown has been extended by another two weeks. This has been necessitated by the realisation that although there has been a notable decrease in the number of Covid-19 infections and deaths, more efforts are required to contain the third wave of the pandemic,” said the minister.

“We cannot afford to let our guard down until we are all safe. Members of the public are therefore, urged to take this opportunity to get vaccinated. Government will continue to procure vaccines and avail them to those who are eligible and willing to be vaccinated.” She said.

Under the Level Four Lockdown, inter-city travel remains banned, the dusk to dawn curfew remains in place and businesses operate from 8AM to 3PM.
