Most parents have welcomed the reopening of schools saying Covid-19 had destroyed their children’s education hence they are happy that the children can finally be awarded the chance to achieve their dreams by going back to school.
Government yesterday announced that the schools will open for examination classes on 30 August whilst the rest will go back to school on September 6.
Parents who spoke to this publication reviewed how they had waited long and hard for the government to allow schools to reopen.
Mai Ashley said she was worried that her government school going kids who could not attend online classes will soon forget what they were taught at school hence she is happy that her kids will soon go back to school.
“I am very happy that the government will soon open schools. I was worried that my kids’ school knowledge would go back to zero.
“In-person teaching and real social interaction is essential and getting our children back into schools must be a priority both for their immediate well being and for their future personal and academic development,” she said.
Moreover, Mr Dururu a parent said he welcomes the school reopening and nothing should stop schools from opening since Zimbabwe Covid -19 positive rate has dropped.
“I guess we need to continue monitoring trends, there is good news that the Zim Covid -19 positivity rate has dropped and if the trend continues I guess there is nothing that should stop schools from opening.
“We however have to make sure that teachers are vaccinated as they are at risk, online classes can never be a permanent solution learning can never be complete in virtual classes,” he added.
However some parents we talked to argued that the government was quick to open schools as they haven’t given parents enough time to prepare for the school fees.
“Honestly I think the government should have given us enough time to prepare for schools reopening.
“They announced that schools should reopen in less than 5 days? Where do they expect us to get the money in such short notice? considering that it’s month end and there are other expenses to be met, like rent for example. Mai Zhou lamented.”
Schools closed on June 4 and were set to open for the second term on June 28. However, reopening of schools was postponed because of the increase in Covid-19 cases.
