Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, July Moyo says an Inter-Ministerial committee which is comprised of five different Ministries is set to end congestion in Harare.
He said this during an official launch of the Harare municipal traffic police training in Harare today.
Minister Moyo’s sentiments came following the use of unregistered motor vehicles and pirate taxes that has increased in the city.
Moyo said the government was not going sit and watch while there are a few Traffic Enforcement officers on the road.
“We have very few Traffic Enforcement officers on the ground compared to the increased number of vehicles, area to be covered and number of offences being committed,” said Mr Moyo.
Minister Moyo reiterated that an Inter-Ministerial committee was set up to implement the cabinet decision to decongest the city.
“An Inter-Ministerial committee was set up to implement the cabinet decisions on decongestion, the inter-ministerial taskforce is comprised of five different Ministries which are the ministry of local government, public works and national housing, Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Ministry of Information Communication and Courier Services, Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development and Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology,” he added.
Furthermore, Mr Moyo insisted that the Inter-Ministerial task force was going to address three major problems which was causing congestion in Harare.
“The Inter-Ministerial task force has therefore cast an eagle’s eye on three aspects necessary to the traffic jungle.
“The three aspects to combat Traffic Congestion are Infrastructure Development, Public Transport logistics and Enforcement,” he said.
Up to now congestion in Harare Central Business District {CBD] has continued due to roads that are no longer worthy to sustain the available traffic jam hence there is need for government to tackle the situation.
