Government Purchases 50 More Zupco Buses

In an effort to capacitate public transportation, the government has bought 50 buses which were cleared at Beightbridge Border post yesterday, the buses will be part of the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO).

Zupco has been failing to meet demand since the banning of private commuter operators leaving the commuting public stranded.

A few days ago Zupco entered a deal with the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) by bringing back trains to ease transport problems in major urban areas starting with Bulawayo and Harare.

The Zupco Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr Everisto Madanga said he will give more details concerning the transportation of the new buses when they arrive in Harare.

Since the government banned privately owned commuter omnibuses (kombis), transport shortages have been the order of the day in major cities and towns as the Zupco has struggled to cope with the high demand.

This has led to massive congestions along major intersections.
