Four Families Left Homeless As Fire Destroys Spencer Cook Flat.
A total of four families have been left homeless at Spencer Cook gardens flats in Harare today after the 4th floor of one of the flats was gutted by fire.
No lives were lost.
The Spencer Cook Flats are located opposite Parirenyatwa group of Hospitals at the corner of Takawira and Tongogara roads.
The fire that destroyed all the furniture in the four flats is believed to have been caused by a clothes iron that was left unattended.
Residents at Spencer Cook suspect that the iron was left on an electric plug which was live in one of the affected rooms.
Other residents also insisted that the fire may also have been caused by a stove which was left live.
Efforts to get a comment from the resident in whose room the fire is said to have originated were fruitless as she was not available at the scene, with some residents alleging that she had fled the scene after the incident.
However, other residents were fortunate as the Fire Brigade managed to control the fire before burning the rest of the block of flats.
Responding to the media, a fire brigade worker who requested to remain anonymous said that they tried to stop the fire whilst it was still burning the first room but they failed as the fire was too strong and followed the ceilings of all the rooms in the 4th floor of the flat which constitute flammable material.
