The African Democrats (TAD) opposition political party led by Marco Machona has labeled war veterans as a spoiled bunch who are ungrateful for what the government has done for them over the years.
This came following thirty-nine members of the War Veterans’ Welfare Pressure Group who yesterday appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Court charged with participating in a gathering with intent to cause public violence.
“Our War Vets are just a spoiled bunch. There was no contract to compensate or reimburse War Vets. Attainment of independence was the ultimate compensation.” TAD said in a statement seen by this publication.
TAD stated how the war veterans have been compensated over the years.
“1. Mugabe disbursement payments to Zim War Vets inclusive of disability funds
“2. Many acquired farms, livestock and equipment during the chaotic land reform
“3. Many administered and chaired various cooperatives under the land reform programs.
“4. Many benefited from SME programs and Company share grab initiatives.”
TAD added that joining war was voluntary, not compulsory.
“It was a service not a job or occupational that should be compensated.
“War vets were not the only ones that liberated this country but was a collective national effort that included various communities that provided free shelter, food, sex and clothing during the struggle.” Added T.A.D
It was reported that on October 13, the Zimbabwe Liberation War Veterans Association notified the police of its intention to hold a peaceful march in the Harare central business district (CBD). They were turned down on October 18 on the basis that the country was still under COVID-19 level two lockdown, which meant that all demonstrations were suspended.
On October 26 at around 10am, members of the Police Reaction Group, who were on patrol in the CBD, received information that there was a group of people gathered in Africa Unity Square, corner Third Street and Jason Moyo Avenue in Harare.
The police proceeded to the scene where they engaged the accused persons who indicated that they were war veterans and wanted to hand over a petition to Parliament and President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Munhumutapa offices, which then led to their arrest.
