ZOCC To Set Code Of Ethics For Online Media

The Zimbabwe Online Content Creators {ZOCC} is set to come up with code of ethics which will regulate journalists who use online media as well as other social media influencers.

The codes will facilitate and guide online media content creators to disseminate information that is credible and balanced.

They will also regulate online content creators which range from a blogger, a video blogger, a podcaster, a micro blogger, vlogger, citizen journalists and general social media influencers.

The development comes after there has been a lot of false and unverified information which continue to circulate on different social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and Online news sites.

Speaking during a workshop in Harare yesterday, ZOCC chairman Mr Toneo Rutsito said the code of ethics will also cover and represent vulnerable members like people with disability, those who have chronic illnesses and those who reside in marginalized areas.

Sections which are already in the code of ethics include, the need to be fair, honest and respectful not only towards members of the public but also towards fact.

However ZOCC is working on to add more sections on the document which includes Own integrity and credibility, independence of Content Creators, treating unpublished material and quoting sources of news among others.

Meanwhile, the Content Creators code of ethics will be closely based and guided by the Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe {VMCZ} code of conduct for journalists.
