Unbeatable Festive Football – What To Watch

From 16 right up to 22 December there is an avalanche of unbeatable football for your viewing pleasure on SuperSport and we have picked nine encounters to look out for.

From the Premier League and DStv Premiership to LaLiga, Serie A and the Carabao Cup, we have some mouth-watering fixtures to look out for like Barcelona looking to overcome their European woes by finding their domestic form while Liverpool face a testing period for their cup pedigree.

Somebody has to stop Sundowns and at this very moment all eyes will be on Orlando Pirates to try to hand the Brazilians their first defeat of the season.

THURSDAY, 16 December

Premier League: Chelsea v Everton, :45pm CAT on SS Premier League

Chelsea are unbeaten in their last 26 Premier League home games against Everton (W15 D11) since a 1-0 loss in November 1994. If they avoid defeat here, it would equal their longest ever unbeaten home run against an opponent in their league history (27 vs Spurs between 1990 and 2016). Everton have won three of their last five Premier League games against Chelsea (L2), as many as they had in their previous 15 against them. However, all of these victories have come at Goodison Park.

FRIDAY, 17 December

DSTV Premiership: Sundowns v Orlando Pirates, 7:30pm CAT on SS PSL

When fans look at the PSL fixture calendar, Sundowns v Pirates is one of those encounters that they look for as it is one match that has it all. The two teams met twice this year already with Sundowns winning both of those matches 3-0 and 2-0. On paper this is another match for Sundowns to win, however Pirates are a rejuvenated team, winning three of their last five matches, and are second in the DStv Premiership standings. One thing’s for sure, we can expect goals and more goals in this fixture.

SATURDAY, 18 December

SerieA: Atalanta v Roma, 4:00pm CAT on SS Football

Sitting third in the standings, three points away from leaders Inter Milan this will be an all-or-nothing encounter for Atalanta if they are serious about mounting a serious title challenge this season. Despite crashing out of the Champions League at the hands of Villareal, Gian Piero Gasperini’s side bounced back in style at the weekend, throwing their name in the title hat, but they come up against a difficult opponent in AS Roma who have been inconsistent. Jose Mourinho’s side are coming from a 2-0 win over Spezia at the weekend and will be hoping the win will be their springboard to more victories ahead as they look to secure a Champions League spot for next season.

SUNDAY, 19 December

Premier League: Tottenham Hotspurs v Liverpool 6:30pm CAT on SS Premier League

After having matches postponed in Europe and the Premier League, Tottenham have a mountain to climb at the weekend as they come up against league challengers Liverpool. Covid-19 wreaked havoc in the Spurs camp at both senior and U23 level which resulted in them getting their weekend match against Brighton postponed. Some of their squad members have recovered and resumed training and Antonio Conte will know too well that Liverpool will look to capitalise on their lack of fitness.

Serie A: AC Milan v Napoli, 9:45pm CAT on SS Football

In what will be a crucial league title-deciding match, the two Serie A challengers are set to face off this weekend with Napoli a wounded animal after their recent inconsistences when it comes to results. Milan are in the mix for the title and have been notching some key wins in the build-up to this match. The last meeting between the two teams ended in a 1-all stalemate and before that game Atalanta thrashed Roma 4-1 in December last year.

MONDAY 20 December

Premier League: Everton v Leicester,   Premier League: Everton v Leicester, 2:00pm CAT on SS Premier League

In the battle of the Blues, Rafa Benitez will need to start winning matches consistently if he is to remain at Merseyside longer as fans continue to call for his head. Facing a resurgent Leicester will definitely provide a huge test of character for his charges. The Foxes crashed out of Europe which probably gives them more time to focus on the domestic challenge and they will know too well that on their day the Toffees are capable of springing a surprise, as they did against Arsenal recently. This will be the two teams’ first of their two-legged league matches but they have played each other already this year and that match ended in a 1-1 draw.

TUESDAY 21 December

LaLiga: Sevilla v Barcelona, 10:30pm CAT on SS LaLiga

If there is ever a time any team looked forward to playing Barcelona, it will be now. Xavi Hernandez’s side just got relegated to the Europa League and their domestic form is dwindling as they continue to drop points. Sevilla are second on the LaLiga table, eight points behind leaders Real Madrid and a win over the Catalans will be crucial in them shaving off Real’s lead. Barca won the last two meetings between these two teams, 3-0 in the Copa del Rey and 2-0 in LaLiga
