Warriors captain Knowledge Musona will not be traveling to Zimbabwe to join his teammates when they commence preparations for Africa Cup Of Nations to be played next year in January.
He will instead meet up with them in Cameroon according to Soccer24.
The 31-year old, who is on the books of Saudi Arabian top-flight side Al Tai, will lead Zimbabwe at the continental showpiece, having done so in the last one in Egypt in 2019.
Norman Mapeza’s charges are expected to start preparations for the biannual spectacle in Harare on December 23, but Musona will not join his teammates in Cameroon.
Team Manager Wellington Mpandare revealed that Musona’s last game for Al Tai will be on the 31st of December, hence he will fly directly to Cameroon right after.
Next year’s AFCON will be played without Khama Billiat who recently retired from international football with warriors midfielder Marvelous Nakamba likely to be out of the contention because of an angle injury.
Marshall Munetsi will also miss the AFCON fiesta because of an injury.
However, right-back Tendayi Darikwa has excused himself from being part of the squad for personal reasons and the recovery of Zemura, who missed the Warriors’ last two 2022 World Cup qualifiers, is a big consolation.
Zemura is set to be playing in his first AFCON tournament for Zimbabwe in Cameroon and he is very much geared physically and psychologically.
He said:
“Playing in a team or playing in a tournament for the first time is always something which is scary, so to say. But, this is very common in this game.
“Let me say I am super excited to be going to be a part of this extravaganza.
“This is Africa’s biggest football tournament where the best players from our continent meet.
“It’s always tough to be playing against the best of the best but we are ready to face anyone. “We qualified for the tournament just like every participant there and we know we are also capable.
“But I am happy, as an individual, to be playing in that tournament for the very first time. This is one of the best tournaments in the world and you always want to be part of the fun. I am ready and I pray that no eventualities like injuries stand in the way.”
