Four Mutare copper cable thieves were precluded by police after digging out NetOne trenches near a local hotel in the eastern border city while attempting to steal copper cables.
Manicaland Police spokesman assistant inspector Wiseman Chinyoka today confirmed the arrest of two copper cables thieves in Mutare. He said two others are still at large.
Chinyoka said on January 4, police at Mutare Central Police Station acknowledged a tip-off that there were four people digging a trench in Fairbridge Park near the Wise Owl hotel in Mutare.
He said police reacted swiftly to the tip off.
“After the appearance of police, the four cable thieves exited in different paths into the dense forest. However police managed to arrest two suspects, Godfrey Mutsingo and Peter Manase. They were snagged with a 40 metre copper cable. The two other suspects are still at large,” Chinyoka said.
In another related matter on Wednesday, two brothers, Herbet and Kingstone Musharu from Odzi were caught with 5kg telephone cables at Beverly Hills farm.
Chinyoka also validated the incident.
He said Malcom Guzheti, a TelOne security guard came across the pair cutting telephone wires, and he swiftly countered and manhandled them.
