Telecel Dismisses Closure Claims

Telecel Zimbabwe has dismissed claims that they are closing amid ongoing network challenges they have been facing for some weeks.

Earlier in the day a local online tech news publication, Techzim, published an article claiming that Telecel Zimbabwe, the country’s third largest Mobile Network Operator has shut down.

But, in a statement Telecel assured its customers that the news was fake.

“Telecel Zimbabwe would like to draw the public attention to the current network challenges that it has been experiencing intermittently. At the moment, customers are failing to make voice calls and at time access data services.

“This is due to expired software on the main mobile switching controller. The software has since been renewed. However, the network is still having call control rejections.

“The company is working in close co-operation with the vendor Huawei, to rectify the challenge and we are confident of resolution in the shortest possible time,” read the statement.

Telecel, through its CEO Mrs Angeline Vere also dismissed the claim.

She was quoted by TechnoMag stressing that the network challenge was being caused by expired software running on their network, which has now been updated but taking time to finally propagate.

“At the moment, customers are failing to make voice calls and
at times access data services. This is due to expired software on the main Mobile Switching Controller (MSC). The software has since been renewed. However, the network is still having call control rejections.”
