Ethiopian University To Start Teaching Swahili

The Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia will start teaching Swahili language after signing an agreement with a Tanzanian university.

Swahili language studies will be facilitated by the University of Dar es Salaam.

The move comes days after the African Union adopted Swahili as an official working language.

UNESCO last year declared 7 July as the world’s official day to celebrate the Swahili language.

Swahili is the national language of Tanzania, spoken by at least 15,000,000 people across the country (according to a survey from 2012).

It is also the national language of Kenya, where the language is known as Kiswahili, and is spoken in Somalia.
