Suspended Harare Mayor, Jacob Mafume has come under the spotlight for continuously interfering with council operations, despite his case pending before a tribunal.
Despite being suspended, Mafume reportedly moved back into office, claiming to be still in charge of operations at Town House and even ordered Acting Town Clerk Mabhena Moyo to disregard the performance-based contract signed by senior government officials recently.
Acting Mayor Stewart Mutizwa confirmed Mafume’s unbecoming behaviour, saying it has become a cause for concern.
“Yes, he reported for duty and we are all surprised because he is supposed to appear before a tribunal set by the Minister of Local Government and Public Works. He came and is disturbing all operations including ordering the Town Clerk not to subscribe to the performance-based contract signed on Monday. His interference with the city operation is now a cause for concern,” he said.
The Permanent Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Harare Province, Mr Tafadzwa Muguti also said Mafume was on the wrong side of the law.
“This is in breach of the law. We cannot have two mayors and the case of Mafume is disturbing because what we know is that he is not supposed to report for duty as he has a pending case before the tribunal set by minister July Moyo,” noted Muguti.
Information gathered by ZBC News reveals that after causing chaos at Town House, the suspended mayor is now reportedly on the run.
