Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) has held a press conference in Harare today presenting the funding strategies for Road routine and Periodic maintenance as well as Emergency Road Rehabilitation Program 2 to its stakeholders.
Addressing journalists, Zinara Chairman Dr George Munyaya said Zinara will disburse funds to road authorities for road maintenance and they have set aside 17 ZWL Billion for this year’s project.
The funds will be disbursed to District development fund, Harare City Council, Bulawayo City Council and other cities.
“In total this year Zinara in the next two weeks is ready to disburse 17 ZWL billion dollars for road rehabilitation,” said Dr Munyaya.
He further added that the disbursements are given to road authorities who are responsible for road maintenance.
“Road infrastructure 2 is key to the socio-economic development.
“We urge the road authorities to ensure timely acquittals which are key for them to access the next disbursements,” he said.
Meanwhile, CEO of Zinara, Mr Nkosinathi Ncube said Zinara funds are not for new road construction but for maintenance.
“Zinara funds are not for new road construction, Zinara funds are for maintenance, when you build a road you have to maintain that road.
“When the funds are disbursed the local authorities and councils are suppose to maintain the roads, what went wrong in the past is that for almost 7years or so roads were not being maintained which is why they are now damaged,” Mr Ncube said.
Zinara Chairman Dr Munyaya promised a rebranded Zinara with a robust framework for 2022.
