PAZ Blasts ZUPCO 100% Fares Hike

Passenger Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) president Tafadzwa Goliati has denounced the recent increase of fares by the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company {ZUPCO} which will be effective on June one.

In a statement on Friday, ZUPCO announced that Kombi passengers will now pay $220 from $100 for 20km whilst buses increased to $140 from $80.

ZUPCO added that kombis will charge $260 from $120 for a distance of 21 to 30 km whilst buses will charge $220 from $120. For 31 to 40 km it said passengers will pay $220 from $120.

Despite ZUPCO’s increase of fares, Goliati said the fares are “unjustified”.

“As passengers, we also need to be consulted to understand why the fares are being increased because some hikes are unjustified. As commuters, we cannot budget if the transport fares keep on being increased,” he said.

The increase of ZUPCO fares comes barely a month after the public complained about transport shortages.

In response, President Emmerson Mnangagwa promised to bring back private operators under strict government regulations.
