Mwonzora Calls For Pomona Deal Renegotiation

MDC president Douglas Mwonzora yesterday advised the government to renegotiate the Pomona waste management deal and include all stakeholders to address what he described as “anomalies” within the contract terms”.

The Pomona waste management deal is an agreement between the Harare City Council and Geogenix BV, which aims to turn waste to energy by generating 22 megawatts of electricity to be sold to Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA).

Addressing journalist in Harare Mwonzora, said the deal did not go through the correct public procurement processes, and it has not been subjected to any oversight by parliament.

He said there are anomalies in the Pomona Deal’s contract terms.

“We propose that the government must renegotiate this deal number one. They must take into account what we have observed as a stakeholder. We have observed certain anomalies within this deal which make this deal suspended without financial sense, so we need recommendations to justify the deal. Certain observations by the council must also be taken into account so that the deal benefits Zimbabwe.

“It can be good for Zimbabwe if it is renegotiated. For example, they talk about Harare supplying about 500 to 1000 tonnes of refuse and yet we know that Harare has 8 trucks that are functioning so 8 trucks cannot meet the demands. We would favor a deal where an investor would supply the trucks that collect garbage to the dumpsite, and people will benefit, so there is a need to relook at the deal,” he said.

Despite citing irregularities in the Pomona contract terms, Mwonzora insisted MDC is a Social Democratic party that supports investments and development.

Meanwhile, Pomona project is headed by the company’s Zimbabwean representative, Delish Nguwaya, who is infamous for his proximity to the first family.

He was also implicated in the controversial Drax Scandal, as well as other corrupt dealings.
