Beleaguered CCC Condemns Political Violence

Zimbabwean News You Can Trust.

The Nelson Chamisa-led Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) says it wants elections, not war following a series of attacks targeting its supporters in recent days.

The main opposition’s call for peace comes after suspected ZANU PF officials brutally assaulted CCC supporters recently in Murewa (Murehwa).

On Saturday, CCC members were arrested in Budiriro while conducting a private CCC meeting at the home of Costa Machingauta, an MP.

Speaking to NewsDay on Sunday, CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere said they have raised their concerns with independent commissions.

She said, “the latest incident is what transpired in Budiriro on Saturday. The political violence is confirmation that their backs are against the wall. We reiterate that we want elections, not war.

“This should be a battle of ideas and not broken bones. To beat innocent citizens and women is an unconstitutional breach of dignity and Ubuntu.

“We have put the region on notice. We have engaged the Chapter 12 Commissions.

“We will leave no stone unturned to ensure the perpetrators are brought to book.”

However, Zanu-PF recently denied CCC allegations with its Mashonaland East Chairperson Daniel Garwe, accusing the main opposition party of having tendencies of stage managing violence.

He said, “The opposition Citizen Coalition for Change’s propensity to stage-manage “political violence” incidents ahead of elections is well documented and some of their senior officials are currently before the courts for such lies.

“The possibility that the Murewa incident was also stage-managed to draw negative international attention should not be discounted at this point.”

Over a week ago, some elderly CCC members were beaten in Murewa, also for holding a private meeting at a home.

Police said they have arrested three suspects in connection with the violence. The suspects were identified as Never Chimutashu (67), Paul Kachigu (34) and Dignity Nadzo (31).
