The Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) has implored journalists to be ethical when they cover the upcoming 2023 general election, scheduled for August 23.

Addressing journalists in Harare today, ZMC Chairperson, Ruby Magosvongwe, urged the media to promote the ‘free flow of information’ during the campaigning period.

She said, “Regarding the upcoming elections, the Commission is particularly interested in seeing a professional and responsible media which promotes free flow of information and content which enables our citizens to make informed decisions. Elections should not divide us, different choices do not diminish our collectivity, we are still Zimbabweans, one family, driven by shared hopes, dreams, aspirations and we share a common history.”

The Media regulatory body also issued a manual for journalists, with the aim of instilling what it termed “peace reporting.”

At the ceremony, journalists from different media houses also received Press Jackets colloquially referred as “maReuben Barwe”, which were popularized locally by legendary ZBC reporter Reuben Barwe.

“We are happy for this kind gesture from ZMC. We have been given these press jackets, which I think will provide safety for the media during election campaigns, because security forces will easily recognize us,” said Leopold Munhende, a prominent journalist.
