Local comedienne and socialite Felistas Murata, populary known as  Mai Titi, was yesterday sentenced to 12 months in prison for theft of trust property by a Harare Magistrate.

The controversial socialite will serve an effective six months in prison as six months were suspended on condition that she doesn’t commit a similar crime in the next five years.

Murata will serve an additional 3 months for defaulting on a community service sentence that she got 8 years ago, bringing her total prison stay to 9 months.

Delivering her sentence, Harare Magistrate Munashe Chibanda said “Accused was convicted of domestic violence in 2015 and sentenced to 3 months in prison which were suspended on conditions that she perform 105 hours.

“Her only excuse is that she was not aware of the warrant of arrest. Court finds that accused was in willful default and the warrant of arrest is confirmed. Accused is to serve the alternative sentence of three months.”

In sentencing on the theft of trust property charge, she added: “This court is of the view that a fine will trivialize the offense. It would send the wrong message to would be offender. She is not suitable for community service.”

Mai Titi is popularly known for her social media controversies such as endless rants towards real or perceived opponents, and in recent weeks alleged nude pictures of her went viral on different social media platforms, though she denied.
