Former cabinet minister Saviour Kasukuwere has filed his nomination papers to for the Presidential elections scheduled for AUGUST 2023.
The burly Kasukuwere, who went to self imposed exile after a 2017 coup de tat which toppled his late mentor Robert Mugabe, will contest as an independent candidate as he seeks to wrestle the Presidency from Mnangagwa, whom he described as a “failure”.
In his letter, Kasukuwere said he made the decision by public demand.
“I humbly write to you on the eve of the sitting of the nomination court to inform you that I have considered your plea for my return home to participate in our 2023 electoral processes,” read the letter. “I accept the call to run for the office of President of the Republic of Zimbabwe.”
The now South African based Kasukuwere castigated President Mnangagwa’s failure to revive the economy which he said is now in shambles.
He said more years with Mnangagwa’s government will cause harm to the already bleeding economy.
“The country can not afford another five years of toxic political differences, a failed economy and social strife. It is time to settle this by throwing this matter back to the people through this election for them to make a choice between fear and hope.”
‘Tyson’ as he is affectionately known also said reconciliation and rebuilding will revive the pride which Zimbabwe lost almost three decades ago.
“Its time to reconcile, to put our past differences aside and embrace one another while acknowledging our failures and repair the damage that has been caused internally and externally.”
He implored Zimbabweans to unite with him in strengthening Zimbabwe.
“Please join me in the fight against fear and pursuit of the renewed hope for our beloved country,” he said.
