Mutoriro Survivor Speaks On Recovery, Helping Other Drug Addicts

What started as an experiment for Columbus Mushore, a former drug addict ended up as a life style.

Columbus (35) resides in New Prospect Park Suburb, some 4km South of the Harare’s Central Business District (CBD).

Mushore became a drug addict in 2017 and lived in the shackles of substance abuse for more than five years.

This was a torrid time for his wife Faith Mrewa who often lived in fear of harassment.

“He was unpredictable and I was in fear since some of the drug addicts are violent.”

Just like the prodigal son, who came back to his senses and returned to his father’s house, Columbus managed to rescue himself from substance abuse and is now a rescue hub for those who are being afflicted by drug addiction.

Narrating his story, Columbus said his survival and recovery from drug abuse was more of a divine call.

Mushore says that one day while smoking Mutoriro(crystal meth) he heard a voice say, “if you are to abstain from drug abuse you are going to help other youths who are in a similar situation as yours.”

The visibly rejuvenated Columbus said he then went to seek assistance from rehabilitation centers and that was the turning point in his life.

He later formed an organisation named “Heal Us Zimbabwe” which is assisting drug addicts to recover from their affliction.

Mushore claims that his organisation has managed to rescue a Harare man (name withheld) from drug addiction.

He added that the man had since recovered and reunited with his family thanks to the Heal Us Zimbabwe programs.

Columbus said  his aim is to be a good Samaritan who helps drug addicts to recover and reunite with their families.

“We are on the move and we are expecting to assist more,” he said.

He said his fight in drug abuse would reduce the spreading of sexually transmitted diseases which are on the rise among drug addicts.

“Drug addicts have high libido and they are vulnerable HIV\ AIDS and other related sexual diseases,” said Mushore.
