A Harare man from Zengeza 4 suburb in Chitungwiza reportedly raped an 18 year old mentally challenged woman.
According to a report made to the police, the complainant’s parents left the country for South Africa and left the complainant, Ropafadzo Getrude Nyenge, in the hands of their friend in Belvedere.
The complainant, however, reportedly left Belvedere and went to stay in Harare Central Business District (CBD) on dates not provided in the report made to the police. On July 17, this year, Getrude allegedly left the Harare CBD in search of his uncle who used to stay in Chitungwiza.
Upon arrival, Getrude discovered his uncle had relocated to another suburb. The complainant went to Zengeza 4 shopping center, where she met the accused, Owen Mazhazhike, drinking beer at Mukaro Bottle store. Mazhazhike then took Getrude to his place, and reportedly raped Getrude five times without protection.
After the repulsive act, Muzhazhike reportedly chased away Getrude from his home, and Getrude went to Mukaro Bottle store where she disclosed the matter to Precious Svedhani, who then accompanied her to the police.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson for Harare province, Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed about the incident.
“The complainant and the accused person are not related. The complainant is mentally challenged. Sometime in 2022 Ropafadzo Getrude NYENGE’s parents left the country for South Africa. They left Ropafadzo Getrude NYENGE in the custody of their friend, whose name could not be established, who resides at number 23895, Belvedere, Harare. Ropafadzo Getrude NYENGE however left the place and went to stay in Harare Central Business District. On 17 July 2023 at around 1400 hours, Ropafadzo Getrude NYENGE proceeded to an unknown house number in Zengeza 4, Chitungwiza, where her unidentified uncle used to reside. Upon arrival at the house, she discovered that her uncle had relocated to an unknown address.
“Ropafadzo Getrude NYENGE then went to Zengeza 4 Shopping Centre where she met Owen MASHAZHIKE who was drinking beer at Mukaro Bottle Store. Owen MASHAZHIKE called Ropafadzo Getrude NYENGE and asked her if she was hungry. Ropafadzo Getrude NYENGE requested for water to drink. Owen MASHAZHIKE then took Ropafadzo Getrude NYENGE to his place of residence where he is employed as a caretaker. Along the way, Owen MASHAZHIKE assured Ropafadzo Getrude NYENGE that he was going to provide her with everything she wanted inclusive of clothes, food and employment. Upon reaching house number 14033A, New Zengeza 4, Chitungwiza Ropafadzo Getrude NYENGE sat in the dining room watching television.
“Owen MASHAZHIKE entered his bedroom and returned to the dining room whilst naked. He suddenly grabbed the complainant, closed her mouth with his hands, forcibly removed her clothes and dragged her into the bedroom. The accused person placed the complainant on the bed where he raped her once without protection. He further raped the complainant five times during the same night. On 18 July 2023 at around 0700 hours, the accused person ordered the complainant to leave his place of residence.
“The complainant went to Mukaro Bottle Store where she met Precious SVEDHANI, NR unknown, a female aged 35, contactable on 0715 912 664. The complainant revealed the matter to Precious SVEDHANI who then took her to her place of residence in Zengeza 4, Chitungwiza. On 18 July 2023 at around 2200 hours, Precious SVEDHANI accompanied the complainant to ZRP Zengeza where a report was made,” said Chakanza.
