Harare Woman Reports Rape 2 Years After Incident

A Harare man from Madokero has been hauled before the courts for allegedly raping his ex girlfriend more than two years ago, in January 2021.

According report made to the police, Kennedy Hwangwa allegedly invited Phyllis G. Chikwanda at his workplace and the two agreed to go to Harare Safari Lodge to meet Hwangwa’s  father.

Upon arrival at the lodge, Hwangwa is alleged to have lured chikwanda into a room, telling her that his father may have already left for his rural home.

It is alleged that upon entering the room, Hwangwa started kissing her while she sat on the bed before he allegedly forced himself on her and had non consensual intercourse with her.

After the alleged rape Hwangwa is said to have promised to give the Chikwanda money, promising to marry her. The two then continued to have consensual intercourse and the former’s place.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Harare Provincial spokesperson, Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the incident and said investigations were in progress.

“Complainant is the accused person’s ex girlfriend. On an unknown date during the month of January 2021 around 1300 hours, accused person invited complainant at his workplace. The two agreed to go to Harare Safari Lodge to meet the accused person’s father.”

“On arrival, they did not see accused person’s father and the accused told the complainant that his father might have gone to their rural home.  Accused person then lured the complainant into a room and he closed the door. He started kissing the complainant whilst she was sitting on the bed. Accused person then forced the complainant to lie on the bed.”

“He forcibly undressed the complainant and raped her once without protection. The complainant screamed for help but to no avail. The accused went to shower after the act. However, the accused promised the complainant to give her money and marry her in order for her not to tell anyone.”

“The y continued having consensual sexual intercourse on three or more different occasions at the accused person’s place. In May 2023 complainant decided to tell her friend Saina Moyeka since she realized that she was still traumatized about the rape.

“A report was made at ZRP Marimba on 9 August 2023. Complainant was escorted to MSF Mbare clinic for medical examination. Scene was attended and no arrest was made. Investigations are in progress ZRP Marimba,” reads the docket.
