Taxi Operator Loses Car To Fake Passengers

Harare man loses vehicle to two unknown assailants after they allegedly hired him.

Dylan Mutonga is alleged to have received a call from the as yet to be identified car jackers requesting him to provide taxi services for them. After picking them up, they allegedly requested that he drive them to Hatfield, before allegedly robbing him of his black Honda Fit on an unnamed dust road near One Commando Barracks.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Harare Provincial spokesperson, Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the incident and said investigations were in progress.

“On 9 August 2023 around 1500 hours, complainant was phoned by two [2] unknown male adults requesting for taxi services. Complainant drove his black Honda Fit registration number ACP 8616 to town and picked the two accused persons along Rotten Row Road opposite ZANU (PF) Headquarters.

“The two [2] accused persons purported to be a ZANU (PF) campaign team. They then stated that they wanted to carry out a campaign around the Central Business District using the taxi. The complainant was in company of his friend Tinashe MADZONGO NR 63-164660 Q 25, aged 23, of  Park town, Waterfalls.

“The accused persons then requested Tinashe MADZONGO to drive towards Hatfield along Joshua Nkomo. After driving they reached an unnamed dust road near One Commando Barracks. One of the accused persons requested to relieve himself and he disembarked from the vehicle.

“He then returned to the motor vehicle now armed with a taser (electric shock). He ordered complainant and the driver to disembark from the motor vehicle. They took control of the motor vehicle and drove off along the dust road heading eastwards leaving the two at the scene.

“A report was made at ZRP Braeside. Scene was attended and no arrest was made. Total value stolen is US$3 000-00 and nothing was   recovered.  CID Vehicle Theft Squad was advised. Investigations are in progress,” reads the docket.
