In a heart-wrenching incident that has left the Epworth community in disbelief, a man in the area allegedly raped a mentally challenged 21 year old woman.
According to a report made to the police, the suspect, Dylan Mangwiro met with Tatenda Melody Dimba at a borehole in Epworth in August last year, and he proposed love to the woman, and she reportedly accepted it.
After she accepted his proposal, Mangwiro then allegedly asked her to assist him in carrying his 20 litre bucket of water to his residence. Upon arrival, Magwiro is alleged to have invited the woman to his room, where he reportedly raped her once without protection.
In February this year, Mangwiro again alleged to have invited Melody to his place where he allegedly had unprotected sex with her once, before reportedly ordering her to keep it a secret.
On August 17 last month, Melody’s aunt informed Melody’s mother that she suspected that her daughter might be pregnant. This prompted them to conduct pregnant tests, and the results came positive. Moments later, they reported the matter to the Epworth police station.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Harare provincial spokesperson, Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the incident, insisting investigations are underway.
“Sometime in August 2022, in the morning, the complainant who is suspected to be mentally challenged met the accused person at a borehole. The accused proposed love to the complainant and the proposal was accepted. The accused person then requested the complainant to help him carry a 20 liter bucket of water to his house. The complainant accepted and on arrival the accused invited the complainant into his room where the complainant entered and sat on the bed.
“The accused person told the complainant that he wanted to have sexual intercourse with her and she refused. The complainant told the accused person that she was leaving and the accused person pulled the complainants dress and tripped her down. The accused person covered the complainant’s mouth with his hand so that she cannot scream. The accused removed complainant’s pant and dropped his short to the knee level. He forcibly inserted his erect unprotected penis into her vagina and had sexual intercourse with her once without her consent. After the act, the complainant then went home and did not tell anyone.
“Sometime in February 2023 the accused person invited the complainant to his place of residence and had unprotected sexual intercourse with the complainant once and she did not tell anyone. On 17 August 2023 the complainant’s aunt Agness Phiri (details not known) suspected the complainant to be pregnant. She informed the complainant’s mother about the issue and they brought a pregnant test kit. The test became positive and that is when the complainant divulged the abuse. A report was made at ZRP Epworth on the 26 August 2023,” reads the docket.
