Government Launches Garbage Collection Program, Describing Council As Failures

Government has launched Operation Chenesa Harare, a program which is aimed at promoting cleanliness in the sunshine city as the Zimbabwean capital is affectionately known.

The program was announced by The Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting services through its X handle.

According to the post, the initiative comes after the Harare City Council has failed to provide reliable and consistent refuse collection services to Harare residents, exposing them to diseases such as Cholera.

“Government launched Operation Chenesa Harare, following the failure by the Harare Municipality to collect garbage, provide clean portable water as well as fix the sewer in the capital city. The operation will be carried out over seven days and will target to curb the spreading of cholera,” reads the statement.

In March last year, the City of Harare in partnership with Combined Harare Residents Trust came up with the similar program which was aimed at improving waste management through making residents active stakeholders in cleaning their communities.

The initiative did not yield much fruit as garbage collection continued to be an unending problem for Harare, a city which used to be known for its cleanliness.

Harare in among cities in Zimbabwe which are battling with a cholera outbreak.

The disease is mainly caused by poor sewer reticulation, lack of garbage collection and lack of clean and safe drinking water for residents.
