The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has arrested a 23 year old man for allegedly raping a mentally challenged woman in Mufakose last year.
It is reported that last month, the victim’s guardian was informed by his wife that the victim had skipped her periods since December last year.
Upon hearing this, he informed the victim’s sister, who lives in Mabvuku, that her sibling was pregnant.
The victim’s sister is then said to have interrogated her about the pregnancy, leading to a confession that she was impregnated by a neighbour.
A 23 year old man, who is a neighbour, had allegedly taken advantage of the victim’s condition to sex*ally abused her twice without protection between November and December 2023.
The victim and her sister then reported the case to the police, leading to the suspect’s arrest.
ZRP Harare Provincial Spokesperson Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the arrest.
“Accused person and complainant are not related, but they are neighbours. Sometime in January 2024, the informant was informed by his wife that the complainant, who is mentally challenged, had missed her menstrual period as from December 2023.
“On 17 February 2024, the informant asked complainant’s sister, a female adult, to interview the complainant. The complainant confirmed to her sister that she was pregnant, and she further stated that she was rap*d by the accused person sometime in November 2023 and December 2023 at his place of residence. A report was made at ZRP Marimba. Scene was attended by ZRP Marimba, the accused person was arrested,” reads the police report.
