The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat) has launched an economic census, which will gather comprehensive baseline statistics on the size and structure of the economy next year.

The economic census shall be conducted after every five years to track dynamics in economic activities in the formal and informal business sector.

It will cover all business establishments operating in Zimbabwe, except those engaged in agriculture, forestry, fishing, public administration, defense, compulsory social security activities and extraterritorial organizations.

According to ZimStat, the census will be conducted in four stages, as follows: mapping of establishments, listing of establishments, output survey and economic census enumeration period, starting from May 1 this year to April 2025.

Speaking during an economic sensitization workshop for Harare Metropolitan province last week Friday, ZimStat representative said its economic census will cover informal businesses like Glenview 8, Gazaland, Magaba Hatcliff, Mupedzanhamo and Mbare musika among others.

The statistics body added it will also cover shopping malls in the Harare Central Business District (CBD), like Kwamme Mall, Galaxy Mall, and other business establishments like Sam-levy, Avondale, Westgate and Madokero.

ZimStat is a corporate body established through the Census and Statistics Act of 2007. The Board manages and controls its operations. The agency is the main source of official statistics in Zimbabwe and is mandated to play a coordination and supervisory role within the National Statistical System.
