The Palestinian ambassador to Zimbabwe, Tamer Almassri, today hailed President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s solidarity with Palestinians at the 79th United Nations General Assembly, where he called on the international community to intervene and end the Israeli military exercise in Gaza.

In a statement, Dr. Almassri said, the Zanu Pf first secretary “emphasis on human rights and self-determination resonates profoundly with Palestinians’ aspirations for peace and dignity”.

The diplomat added that the SADC Chairman’s gratitude in these difficult times will push other countries to call for a ceasefire in Gaza and strengthen Palestinians, especially when Israel is expanding its military action in other regions.

“We are hopeful this solidarity will inspire other nations to follow suit and advocate for Palestinian rights in international forums. The courage demonstrated by President Mnangagwa serves as a beacon of hope, especially at a time Israel is expanding its genocide to Westbank and Lebanon creating a regional war,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mnangagwa, who didn’t attend the UN assembly in person for unknown reasons, but sent Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Frederick Shava, urged the international community to act on what he termed the “suffering of the Palestinian people”.

He said the Security Council must fulfill its mandate by implementing robust measures that ensure the protection of civilians against Israeli military action in Gaza, which has so far claimed thousands of innocent civilians, according to Dr. Almassri.

“The time for mere rhetoric is long past. The international community cannot continue to turn a blind eye or be numb to the systematic injustices and suffering of the Palestinian people. We call upon the Security Council to fulfill its mandate by implementing robust measures that ensure the protection of civilians, the upholding of international law, the facilitation of a just and lasting peace,” said Mnangagwa.
