The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has threatened to mobilize the masses in order to block Zanu Pf and the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) from deferring the 2028 general elections to 2030.
The MDC, once a mighty party, which at the height of its popularity defeated the ruling Zanu Pf at the March 2008 elections says it will fight to its last breath to defend the constitution.
The MDC’s sharp reaction comes after CCC Parliamentary Chief Whip, Charles Moyo, recently called for the deferment of 2028 elections to 2030, citing the need to allow President Emmerson Mnangagwa to be given another 2 years to complete his National Development Strategy 2.
In a statement, the MDC said the CCC’s legislators were “”whipped into line to support the 2030 agenda, just before they visited President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Precabe farm in Kwekwe.
“The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) is not in agreement with this move to desecrate the country’s constitution. Elections must be held in the constitutionally stipulated time frames.
“The MDC opposes the Zanu-PF and CCC plan to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term in office. If they attempt to implement this 2030 plan, the MDC will mobilize the masses to vote No, so as to defend the integrity of the country’s constitution.
Meanwhile, the move to extend Mnangagwa’s term has sparked debate on its impact on democracy in Zimbabwe, and is reportedly part of a broader strategy to circumvent legal barriers preventing the incumbent from seeking a third term.
Late last year, President Mnangagwa publicly said he was a constitutionalist, and he had no plans to extend his term, which ends in 2028.
Opposition LEAD President, Linda Masarira, declined to comment when our reporters reached out to her, insisting that she’d only speak on upon if its announced officially.
“Have it been made officially that elections will be deferred to 2030?
“I would have made a comment, because I came up with a decision that I will comment when the official statement comes out. I can’t comment on rumors,” she said.
