The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) last week arrested a street kid, God-knows Chataika, in connection with the murder of an unknown man at the corner of Kwame Nkrumah and Chinhoyi Street in Harare’s Central Business District (CBD).

It is alleged that God-knows Chataika committed the offense along with three other street kids, Witty, Makeni, and Keda, who are still at large.

On the day in question, it is alleged that the victim was walking in Harare CBD after work when four street kids reportedly attacked him, snatched his phone, and pushed him to the ground on the tarred road, where he sustained a deep cut at the back of his head and later died.

Following the tragic incident, the police arrested God-knows, who narrated that his accomplices Witty, Makeni, and Keda were responsible for the disturbing act, attacking the victim without apparent reason. Chataika told the police he was only observing when the victim was attacked.

ZRP Harare provincial spokesperson Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the shocking incident and said investigations to arrest the remaining three suspects are underway.

“On 15 January 2025, at around 0130 hours, information was received from an informant who is a street kid residing at a sanitary lane at Copacabana toilets, indicating that there was a case of suspected murder at Chicken Slice at the corner of Kwame Nkrumah and Chinhoyi Street. It is alleged that four street kids pounced on the now-deceased, who was busy operating his cellphone, forcefully took it, and violently pushed him to the ground.

“He fell to the ground and sustained a cut at the back of his head. One of the accused persons, God-knows Chataika, who resides at Construction House as a street kid, was arrested and is assisting the police with the investigations. God-knows Chataika said that the other three accused persons who are at large are street kids who stay at Construction House, and their names are only known as Witty, Makeni, and Keda. The accused stated that he was standing at the corner of Nelson Mandela and Chinhoyi Street when he saw the now-deceased appearing to be very drunk and staggering.

“He then saw the three accused persons, Witty, Makeni, and Keda, approaching the now-deceased. Makeni snatched the now-deceased’s cellphone he was holding, and Keda pushed the now-deceased, who fell on the tarred road facing upwards, and all the accused persons ran away from the scene. The scene was attended by ZRP Kopje. It was observed that the deceased is a male adult, dark in complexion, and was wearing a navy blue golf T-shirt and black formal trousers. The now-deceased was barefoot and sustained a cut on the back of his head,” said Chakanza.
