Gokwe South Sesame Bridge which was destroyed by heavy rains last year in December and subsequently rebuilt by the Ministry of Transport, has once again collapsed due to heavy rains.
Gokwe South Rural District Council (RDC) CEO Jabulani Gute announced Monday that the bridge had been destroyed adding the bridge was structurally weak because it lacked gabions, which are essential for reinforcement.
Gute also mentioned that the rains had partially damaged the Manhede Bridge in the Mapfungautsi Constituency.
He said, “We have recorded several rainfall-related challenges in our area. The Sesame Bridge was washed away again due to the heavy rains and the absence of gabions to strengthen the structure. Additionally, the Manhede Bridge in the Mapfungautsi Constituency was partially damaged, but it can be temporarily fixed,” Gute stated.
“The Sesame Bridge was significantly affected, and we have closed it temporarily until the end of the rainy season. Currently, we cannot thoroughly assess the damage or determine the Bill of Quantities (BOQs) needed to fix the bridge due to the high water levels at the site.
“Our roads have not been spared either, primarily because of our loose soils, but we are working on them. We cannot wait until the end of the rainy season because people need access to essential services using those roads.”
