A Chinhoyi woman, Doreen Wendere, was allegedly duped of USD 5000 by Mtise Moyo via a Facebook post claiming to process UK visas for individuals wanting to travel abroad.
According to a police report, Doreen contacted the visa agent in May last year after coming across Moyo’s Facebook post advertising UK visa processing services for a staggering fee of USD 5000.
On June 10, Wendere allegedly paid the first installment of USD 1000, followed by USD 4000 on July 15. The transactions were made in Damafalls, Ruwa, where Moyo was residing at the time.
Despite the successful transactions, Moyo allegedly failed to process the visas as agreed. Doreen attempted to recover her money by making calls, but Moyo was no longer available. The victim subsequently filed a report with the police.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Harare provincial spokesperson Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the incident and said investigations are underway.
“Sometime in May 2024, the complainant contacted the accused person, who she saw on Facebook advertising that she processes UK visas. The complainant was instructed to pay a total of USD 5000. On June 10, 2024, the complainant paid the first installment of USD 1000.
“She then paid another installment of USD 4000 on July 15, 2024, making a total of USD 5000. The transactions were made in Damafalls, Ruwa, where the accused was staying. The accused failed to process the visa for the complainant as per the agreement. The complainant tried to recover her money from the accused, but she was no longer answering her calls and had relocated to an unknown destination. The complainant filed a police report at ZRP Ruwa. Investigations are underway,” said Chakanza.
