Kariba Dam To Undergo Water Release.

The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) says it will conduct a controlled leakage test on Sluice Gate 4 of the Kariba Dam on Tuesday, 29 July 2025 at 5:30 PM, as part of ongoing rehabilitation works under the Kariba Dam Rehabilitation Project (KDRP).

In a public notice issued by the authority, ZRA said the test follows the successful refurbishment of Sluice 4 and mirrors similar procedures recently completed on Sluices 1, 2, and 3.

During the test, approximately 1,500 cubic metres of water will be released in a tightly controlled operation, supervised by expert engineers.

The ZRA has stressed that this is a routine engineering process to verify the proper functioning of the newly refurbished gate.

The authority reassured the public that all safety measures are in place, and the release poses no danger to surrounding communities or infrastructure. ZRA said:

This is a normal and necessary engineering procedure to ensure that the newly refurbished gate is working exactly as designed.

It’s also an important milestone that cannot be postponed, as the project is running on a fixed implementation timeframe.

There is no cause for alarm — all operations will be closely monitored by expert engineers and all safety measures are in place.
