Mwonzora Runs For Life As Marauding Zanu Pf Youths Bay For His Blood

MDC President Douglas Mwonzora reportedly escaped death by a whisker after an attack by suspected Zanu Pf activists in Bulawayo last week.

Mwonzora, who was in the country’s second city to attend court on behalf of a client, went on the address a press briefing at the Bulawayo Press club.

During the address, Mwonzora reaffirmed his well pronounced opposition to ZANU-PF’s plan to amend the constitution and extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term of office to 2030.

Mnangagwa’s second and final term is due to end in 2028. The ruling Zanu Pf resolved at its recent annual national people’s conference in Mutare to table a motion in parliament to extend Mnangagwa’s tenure at the helm.

Mwonzora has been leading a fierce opposition to this move.

The Harare based lawyer occupies a very unique position in the constitutional matter. Besides being a well respected lawyer, with several decades of practice, he was also a law lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe for over 27yrs.

Most importantly Mwonzora is one of the three writers of the constitution where he represented the MDC T, together with Munyaradzi Paul Mangwana of Zanu Pf and the late Edward Mkhosi, who represented the then MDC M.

The alleged attack on Mwonzora came after he had ended the press briefing.

His party in a statement after the attack said:

“Soon after the members of the Press left, Members of the Police mainly from PISI and CID and Youths wearing Zanu-PF Regalia entered the office from the back door numbering about 20, armed with guns and knives and started dismissing people as they advanced towards the MDC Leader threateningly.

“They were chanting 2030 ino budirira chete.

“A stampede then followed as members of the security whisked away the President.

“The thugs could not advance anymore to the front as members if the party blocked their advance forwards the front.

“The MDC President was then wisked away to a safe place.
