MDC Alliance Dismisses Newly Formed Citizens Convergency For Change Party As A Non Event

The Nelson Chamisa led MDC Alliance party which has been facing an identity crises has been further thrown into turmoil after one of the names that has been thought to be it’s new name was taken up and registered by as yet unfamiliar characters.

In a letter addressed to the chairperson of ZEC and dated 20 September 2021, newly formed CCC Secretary-General, Farai Zhou, said the party’s leader, Varaidzo Musungo, will be their 2023 presidential candidate.

“We refer to the above and write further to our letter of 8 September 2021.

“We can confirm that our Party’s President and 2023 Presidential Candidate is Ms Varaidzo Musungo.

“In the interests of better communication, we are sourcing offices in Harare and will advise once we have these.” Stated Zhou.

In a related story exiled former ZANU PF Politburo member, Professor Jonathan Moyo, who has become a staunch critic of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government since his self imposed exile after the 2017 coup.

Early this year Moyo urged the MDC Alliance to take the necessary legal steps to protect the “Citizen Convergence for Change (CCC)” brand.

CCC has over the past few months been touted as an alternative party name for the Nelson Chamisa-led MDC Alliance after MDC-T president Douglas Mwonzora laid claim to the MDC Alliance name.

In a tweet, today Monday, freelance journalist and government critic Hopewell Chin’ono criticised the MDC Alliance for its perceived lack of strategy.

“Jonathan Moyo “@ProfJNMoyo warned citizens against complacency, and also the need to register CCC. Whilst many were busy insulting Jonathan Moyo, this is what the regime was busy doing! Do you now understand that numbers are meaningless without strategy?” He said.

Contacted for comments, MDC Alliance Spokesperson, advocate Fadzai Mahere poured scorn on the new party dismissing it as a non event.

“It’s a non-event. We remain focused on our goal of securing 6 million votes. We are in the middle of a nationwide voter registration campaign. We have set in place mechanisms to ensure the vote is protected.

“The people want change and they know who their leaders are. The citizens are coming together in a broad alliance to win Zimbabwe for change.”

The name crises that Chamisa’s party faces derives from a 2019 Supreme Court ruling which stated that the late MDC founding leader Morgan Tsvangirai had acted unlawfully when he appointed advocate Nelson Chamisa and engineer Elias Mudzuri as co vice presidents outside of congress.

This culminated in Chamisa being declared as an illegal occupant of the MDC T presidency.
