Young Woman Christian Association In Zimbabwe (YWCA), National President Violet Magodo says they are aiming to end Gender Based Violence (GBV) not only against woman but also against man.
In an interview with 263times during the launch of 16 days of activism against Gender Based Violence yesterday at YWCA center in Chiveso Bindura, Magodo said each year during the 16 days of activism against GBV they come together as members of the YWCA and discuss on how best to stop child early marriages as well as abuse of man and woman.
“We have come here to launch the 16 days of activism against gender based violence, which starts on 25 November each year and runs for 16 days, every year the 16 Days of Activism campaign calls for united, global action to end all forms of violence against women and girls. .
“As we launch the activism we will be discussing issues which leads to gender based violence and empowering young advocates with information, educating them about women’s rights, we can build a better future for all,” she said.
Moreover, Magodo said they believe in empowering women through education so they can create a ripple effect that is felt by women, their children and their communities.
“Women are the drivers and backbone of communities, through education and training, we can transform the lives of thousands of women and their children living in poverty.
“We connect with women, so they can create income generating opportunities to provide life-essentials, including food, clothing, shelter and education, for their families, and build a more secure and sustainable future.
“It inspires the education of their own children, and in this way, we can empower and educate whole communities for generations to come,” added Magodo.
Meanwhile, Magodo said they are in a process to open the YWCA Pre school and Tuck shop.
The YWCA donated food and clothes to members of the YWCA in Chiveso village.
Chiveso YWCA chaiperson, Ms Vainess Takavadini said they are grateful for the help they are getting from YWCA.
“We are happy with the gifts we got today from YWCA, since I have joined YWCA I have seen a great change in our society and as women we are now able to get money from our own projects we no-longer depend on money that we get from our husbands, this has also reduced Gender Based Violence in our society,” she said.
Moreover, Takavadini said they are excited about the idea of reopening YWCA pre school.
“YWCA is doing a great job of reopening the pre school here at our center, our children had to travel a long way to school on foot which burdened us, we are glad when the school opens they will not have to walk a long way to school since YWCA pre school is near,” she added.
Members of the YWCA also include man of different age, the sabhukus and counsellors were also part of the people who attended the launch.
The 16 days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December.
