Government Gives Teachers Ultimatum To Return To Work

The Public Service Commission has today issued a statement calling on all teachers to return to work before Tuesday the 22nd of February 2022.

Most teachers are currently striking, demanding a salary increment to their 2018 salaries ranging from US$520 to US$550.

In a statement, the government said failure to report to work will be deemed as resignation and also those already reporting to work but not teaching will not be spared.

The government further threatened that if teachers in institutional accommodations fail to report for duty they are to vacate with immediate effect.

“All teachers, deputy heads and school heads who do not report for duty by Tuesday 22 February 2022 will be deemed to have resigned from the service.

“Those reporting for duty but not teaching will also be deemed to have resigned, ” read the statement.

Furthermore, the government said all unemployed trained teachers, University and college graduates interested in joining the teaching profession should register at district education offices as recruitment will be open immediately after 22 February 2022.

“Unemployed trained teachers, University and college graduates in the sciences, engineering, technical, vocational areas and other disciplines who are interested in joining the teaching profession should ensure that they are registered at the nearest district education offices as recruitment process shall begin soon after 22nd of February 2022.

“Those deemed to have resigned shall not be eligible for this recruitment,” the statement further read.

The government had taken measures to improve the teachers working conditions that included 20 percent increase in Zimbabwean dollar salary backdated to 1 January 2022, USD 100 per month in hard currency effective from 1st of March 2022 and also payment of school fees for up to three biological children per teaching family with the privilege of importing vehicles duty free.
