Nurses and Midwives In Government Association of Zimbabwe (NMGAZ) has today held a press conference, explaining how they are dedicated to conserving lives and never abandoning patients in their darkest hour of need.
Speaking during the conference in Harare, founder of (NMGAZ), Dr Pisirai Ndarukwa said they have been and will always work hard in ensuring that they serve the people even in hard times.
“We have dedicated and very brave nurses and midwives who stood resolutely with dictates of serving their people during this season where we have observed emerging diseases that have put a strain on national resources.
“We have however expressed to our government the need for cushioning of the work force for providing a living wage and assuring the availability of transport at all times when the workforce presents itself to and from work,” said Dr Ndarukwa.
However Dr Ndarukwa said nurses will not accept any pawn from the patient but they need an adjustment of improved working conditions of services from the government.
“We therefore wish to put on record that we shall only engage in mutual negotiations for improving conditions of services with the government while ensuring observations of the international pledge of nurses and midwives.
“We strongly oppose any efforts to use the patient as a pawn in any negotiations for a better adjustment to the cost of living.
“We are still trying to recover as health professions from the dark recent past wherein the patients were abandoned for prolonged periods leading to loss of lives and lack of confidence and trust in healthcare workers,” added Ndarukwa.
The inauguration of the Nurses Council of Zimbabwe board has been done with a view to restore the esteemed image of the nursing and midwifery professions that was seemingly becoming an elusive dream.
