Litmus Test For Zim Judiciary As Bulawayo Man Seeks Zanu Pf Candidate’s Disqualification From Polls

News just in…

In an interesting twist to the intrigue surrounding the August 2023 election, a Bulawayo man has made an urgent court application seeking the disqualification of outgoing Bulawayo South member of Parliament and Zanu Pf candidate for the constituency Rajeshkumar Modi from participating in the polls.

In court papers seen by this publication, Raymond Dudzayi Gombedza, a registered voter from Bulawayo South Constituency, is seeking the barring of Modi from participating in the elections on the basis that he allegedly submitted his nomination papers after the 4PM cut off time.

In case no HC1606/23, Gombedza cites Innocent Ncube of ZEC as the first respondent, ZEC as the second respondent, Rajeshkumar Modi as the third respondent and ZEC Chairperson Justice Priscilla Chigumba as the fourth respondent.

He is being represented by Mathonzi Ncube Law firm.

The case is very similar to the one that was initiated by Zanu Pf activists resulting in the main opposition CCC candidates being disqualified.

It will be interesting to know what the Court will say on this one. It presents a litmus test to Zimbabwe’s judiciary which is accused of being captured by the ruling Zanu Pf party.
