Makone Elected New Mayor Of Harare

Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) Councillor for Ward 18, Ian Makone has been elected as the new Mayor for the city of Harare.

Makone, who is the Secretary for Elections in CCC, replaces lawyer Jacob Mafume also of CCC, who has been at the helm since 2020.

The new Mayor will be deputized by Ward 41 Councillor Kudzai Kadzombe, who is also from the same party.

Makone was nominated for the position by fellow CCC councillors, defeating Tenamy Utete of Zanu Pf by a big margin. The opposition CCC enjoys a huge majority in the council chambers.

Ian Makone is a veteran of opposition politics in Zimbabwe, having been the late Morgan Tsvangirai’s Chief of Staff during the inclusive government. His wife Theressa, was Co-minister of Home Affairs during the same period.

Speaking after his election, Makone said service delivery would be his main focus.
