International football governing mother body FIFA has mourned the late Dynamos and Warriors goalkeeper George Chigova, describing him as a rare breed of Zimbabwean footballers who worked hard to transform both local and international football.
Chigova, who battled heart problems for a short period of time died at the age of 32 in South Africa where he was playing for ABSA Premier League outfit Super sport United.
In a letter that was read on behalf of FIFA President Gianni Infantino by the ZIFA representative Yvonne Mapika Manwa, the late Chigova was described as a well decorated player who had more than thirty caps for the Warriors.
“I would want to express my condolences on the tragic passing of the international goalkeeper George Chigova,” read the letter. “Words may seem inadequate to explain this loss”
He said the legacy of the late great goalie who exhibited his undoubted qualities at COSAFA tournaments and CHAN will be forever remembered.
“Legend for Zimbabwean football, known for his command and presence, his legacy and achievements and in particular his personality will not be forgotten.”
Chigova was given a befitting send off at the Rufaro stadium where thousands gathered to pay their last respect to “Gedhi Muhomwe” as he was affectionately in the soccer circles.
Many soccer legends including his long time friend Khama Billiat spoke well about the late great goalie.
