Zimbabwe is strengthening its bilateral relations with Malaysia in trade, agriculture, technology and business opportunities under the Asian country’s capacity building program initiative.
Speaking on the sidelines of the National Economic Consultative Forum (NECF) and MTCP workshop in Harare Thursday, where beneficiaries who did various courses in Malaysia showcased their knowledge, Fauzi, the Charge De Affairs at the Malaysian embassy in Zimbabwe said the training of government officials is one of the small initiatives Malaysia has towards officializing trade relations between the two countries.
The Malaysian diplomat urged government officials trained with courses under the Zimbabwe Alumni Association Malaysia Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) to use them in various economic sectors and embrace industrialization within the southern African country.
Director of the Research National Economic Consultative Forum (NECF), Godwin Murehwa, who was part of the delegates at the event, also added his thoughts on the cooperation between the two nations, stating that Zimbabwe would benefit because Malaysia has a vibrant economy.
“Malaysia is one of the big economies in Asia, and when we talk about the trade between Malaysia and Zimbabwe, it has a low percentage, so we are looking at exploring further areas and opening up business opportunities,” he said.
Zimbabwe Alumni Association Chairman, Conwell Tumbare, leading the program on the training of government officials in Malaysia, outlined the benefits the country is receiving from these trainings.
“The benefits gained with Zimbabwe on these trainings are that all courses learned we are bringing them back to the community, so that people know the benefits that come from Asia,” he said.
Zimbabwe and Malaysia relations have been depreciating since former President Robert Mugabe passed away in 2019.
During Mugabe’s reign, the two countries enjoyed very cordial relations, buttressed by the late ruler’s close ties to former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammed.
