A Hatcliffe man, Wonder Makonese, has been left counting his loses after he was allegedly duped of over USD2 000 by an Epworth woman, in a botched residential stand deal.

According to a report made filed with the Police, Makonese allegedly received a phone call from the suspect, who indicated to him that she was selling a residential stand in Overspill, Epworth.

The stand was allegedly valued at USD2000.

With the hope of owning his own property, Makonese reportedly fell for the ruse and went to Epworth the meet the suspect and settle the deal. Upon arrival he was allegedly shown the stand, after which he handed over USD1500 as part payment.

However, a few days after the alleged deal, the suspect reportedly reversed the sale, claiming that her husband had declined to sell the stand.

The suspect then allegedly introduced Makonese to two men, claiming that she had given his USD1 500 for another stand.

It is alleged the two men showed Makonese the stand.

Believing that he had finally secured a stand, Makonese proceeded to begin clearing it as he prepared to start building.

It was at this stage that he was approached by one Mbuya Chigwida, who claimed that she was the owner of the stand, reportedly producing Epworth Local Baord papers to prove ownership.

Upon realizing that he had beed dupled, Makonese called the suspect, but hit a dead end as she didn’t answer his call. This promted him to report the matter to the Police.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Harare Provincial Spokesperson confirmed the report and said investigations are underway.

“In October 2024, the complainant received a phone call from the accused informing him that someone was selling a residential stand in Overspill Epworth for US$2000-00. The complainant gave the accused person US$1500-00 as part payment. He was shown the stand. Later, the accused person reversed the deal, saying her husband has refused to sell the so-called stand.

“Within a week, the accused person took the complainant to two men whom she claimed to have given the money for another stand. They indeed showed him another stand. After clearing the stand for development the complainant was approached by one Mbuya Chigwida claiming that the stand belonged to her and she had receipts from Epworth local board.

“The complainant contacted the accused person, who started to ignore him thus realizing that he had been dumped. The total value stolen is US $2150-00 including money paid for the builders who were commisioned to developed the stand,” reads the docket.
