Zim Artist Sells Painting For £163,800 In London

Zimbabwean artist, Portia Zvavahera 35, auctioned a visual painting which was estimated to be between £40,000 and 60,000 for £168,800 pounds.

The sale was made in 20 October 2020 in Philips, London.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Nick Mangwana confirmed this on his twitter handle.

“Zimbabwean artist Portia Zvavahera’s  otherworldly aesthetic, Arising from the Unknown, recently for £163,800 at an auction. It was estimated to be between £40,000 and £60,000 but it leaped way above those projections. The sale was made in Philips, London” He said.

It seems as if art is one of those areas that are ignored in this country yet if one is talented enough, it actually is profitable.

Portia Zvavahera was born on 22 March 1985. She was sent to the BAT Visual Arts Studio under the auspices of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe between 2003 and 2005. She furthered her studies and obtained a Visual Arts diploma from Harare Polytechnic in 2006. In 2013, at the age of twenty-eight, she was asked to represent Zimbabwe at the Venice Biennale, as part of the exhibition Dudziro: Interrogating the Visions of Religious Beliefs.
