Zimbabwe has joined the rest of the world in commemorating the International Day for Biological Diversity as sanctioned by the United Nations to increase awareness and the basic understanding of issues concerning Biodiversity.
Addressing delegates during the launch in Harare today, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Mr M Nunodawafa commended the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) for its commitment towards the country’s development.
Mr Munodawafa urged everyone to play a role to the environment.
”We have to play our part in halting biodiversity loss as benefits of biodiversity and ecosystem services are invaluable. Over 4,3 billion people, more than half the word’s population, depend on biodiversity for their livelihoods. ” He said.
This year the International day for biological diversity is celebrated under theme, ”We are Part of the Solution.”
Meanwhile, Mr Munodawafa said his ministry is also leading in the development of a Wildlife Policy.
”My Ministry is also spearheading the development of a Wildlife Policy to guide us in the management, sustainable use and sharing benefits of Wildlife resources. This also being buttressed by the review of Parks and Wildlife Act. On the same note the Forest Act is also under review to enable us to manage and sustainably use forest resources.” He said.
